Do you ever wonder what Santa and Mrs. Claus looked like when they were younger? I do. Last week, I took a little poll on twitter asking about Mrs. Claus' hair color before she went grey. The overwhelming result was that Mrs. Claus must have been a redhead.
Let's get two things out of the way before we get to the tutorial.
I used Sweet Sugarbelle cutters for these. The Mrs. Claus is the same cutter I used for these Dia de Los Muertos cookies. It's part of the original "shape shifter" kit. The Santa cookie cutter is self-explanatory, and the hearts are Sugarbelle's multi-heart cutter.- Mrs. Claus' face is three times as wide as her husband's.
- Young Santa bears a strong resemblance to Yukon Cornelious.
To make these cookies, you'll need:
- cut-out cookies: Santa, girl face, and hearts
- royal icing, divided and tinted with gel paste food coloring: copper, orange, brown, red, white, green
- disposable icing bags
- couplers and tips: #2, #1, small petal, #5
- toothpicks
- squeeze bottles
- food coloring pens: pink and black
Use #2 tips to outline the cookies and section. Reserve some of the piping consistency icing in red, white, orange, brown, and red.
(Funny note about the color, I thought I was out of orange. I mixed red and yellow, but it wasn't right. I added brown and it was still off. THEN, I found a bottle of orange. I added that and I like the darker orange shade I ended up with.)

Thin the copper, orange, red, and brown icings with water, a bit at a time, stirring with a silicone spatula until the icing is the consistency of thick glue. A ribbon of icing dropped back onto itself will disappear in a count of one-thousand-one, one-thousand-two. (One-thousand-three is ok.)
Cover icing with a damp dish towel and let sit a few minutes. Transfer to squeeze bottles. Fill in the outlined areas. Use a toothpick to guide to edges and pop large air bubbles.
Let the icing dry for at least one hour.
Pipe a mustache onto Santa's face. Flood with thinned icing. Add the hat details, using a small petal tip for the border and a #5 tip for the ball. Add a mouth in red with a #1 tip.
Add the detail to Mrs. Claus, using a #2 tip for the eyes and holly leaf, #1 tip for the hair swirl, #2 tip for the mouth.
Let the cookies dry uncovered overnight.
The next day, use food coloring pens to add Mr. Claus' eyes, Mrs' Claus' eyelashes, and pink cheeks onto both.
How fun would their wedding have been?!? Can you just imagine that dessert table? Oh, I love you, newlywed Santa and Mrs. Claus! ♥
