Yes! You still have time to make Valentine's Day Cookies! You do!
My Valentine cookies are simple this year, but still CUTE! Two-Tone Chocolate Heart Cookies!
What makes these Valentine's Day cookies easy? ONE consistency of royal icing.
I originally planned to outline these in black icing, then flood with red and pink, but I realized that the dark chocolate cookie actually acts as a visual outline.
Here's what you need to make EASY Two-Tone Heart Decorated Cookies:
- chocolate cut-out sugar cookie dough. I used my Chocolate Hazelnut (Nutella) Cut-Out Cookie recipe for these, but you could also use Dark Chocolate Cut-Out Cookie Dough or Black Cocoa Cut-Out Cookies. They are all delicious.
- royal icing. This is my tried and true royal icing recipe.
- gel paste food coloring. I used ChefMaster Super Red and Neon Pink. Any pink or red food coloring will do. Two shades of pink would also be fun, or pink and orange, or red and white...
- squeeze bottles with removable tips or disposable icing bags
- #3 icing tips
- toothpicks
How to Make EASY Two-Tone Heart Decorated Cookies.
Mix up your royal icing and divide into two bowls. Tint one bowl red and the other pink. Cover both by pressing plastic wrap directly onto the icing.
Swap the tips on the squeeze bottles for #3 tips. Or, fit icing bags with #3 tips.
Add water, a bit at a time, to one of the bowls of icing. We'll start with pink, but it doesn't matter. Thin until a ribbon of icing dropped back into the bowl disappears in about 4 seconds. This is a little thicker than I thin it for filling outlines.
Cover the bowl with a damp dishtowel and let sit for several minutes. Uncover, stir, and pour into a squeeze bottle.
Use the icing to create an "outline" and immediately fill it with the same icing. Use a toothpick to guide icing and pop large air bubbles as needed. Do the pink sections on all of the cookies.
Let the cookies set for about an hour. Letting the first color set up for a bit helps prevent bleeding.
Repeat the process with the red icing, completing the heart shapes. Use a toothpick to bring the icing right to the edge of the pink icing.
Let the cookies dry uncovered for 6-8 hours or overnight.
BOOM. Valentine Cookies. Decorated.
